How to Get an Anthropic (Claude) API Key for Praxiss
Last updated: March 2026
Praxiss's BYOK AI feature (Bring Your Own Key) lets your organisation connect directly to a supported AI provider of your choice. You bring the API key, Praxiss does the analysis. This guide walks you through getting a key from Anthropic, the company behind the Claude model family.
Claude is a strong choice for performance management work. The models are known for producing thoughtful, well-calibrated outputs that read naturally, handle nuance, and hold up well when the subject matter is sensitive, like feedback conversations or development reviews.
What is Anthropic?
Anthropic builds the Claude family of AI models. You may know Claude from their consumer product at claude.ai. The API gives you programmatic access to those same models, which is what Praxiss connects to when it generates review summaries, spots strengths and development gaps, and surfaces patterns across your team's feedback.
Claude comes in three tiers: Haiku (fast and affordable), Sonnet (balanced), and Opus (most capable). For most Praxiss use cases, Sonnet models offer the best mix of quality and cost. Haiku is a reasonable option if you want to minimise spend without sacrificing too much on output quality.
Step-by-Step: Getting Your Anthropic API Key
1. Create an Anthropic Account
Go to console.anthropic.com. Click Sign up. You can register with an email address or Google account.
2. Verify Your Email
Anthropic requires email verification before you can access the console. Check your inbox, click the confirmation link, and you're in.
3. Add Billing
You need a payment method on file before you can generate API keys. Anthropic uses a prepaid credit model, not post-pay billing.
- In the console, go to Settings > Billing
- Click Add payment method
- Enter your card details
- Add credits to your account (minimum $5)
The prepaid model means you load credits upfront and API usage draws from that balance. No surprise bills at the end of the month.
4. Generate Your API Key
- Go to Settings > API Keys in the console
- Click Create Key
- Give it a descriptive name, something like "Praxiss" or "Praxiss - [Your Company]"
- Copy the key immediately
Anthropic only shows the full key once. If you handle away without copying it, you will need to generate a new one. The key starts with sk-ant- followed by a long string of characters.
5. Paste It into Praxiss
Log into Praxiss as an admin. handle to Settings > Integrations > AI Configuration. Select Anthropic (Claude) as your provider, paste your API key, and save.
That's it. Praxiss will now use Claude for AI-native performance management features including review summaries, sentiment analysis, and feedback pattern detection.
Pricing: What Will This Cost?
Anthropic charges per token on a pay-as-you-go basis, drawing from your prepaid credit balance. Current pricing as of March 2026:
Model Pricing (Per Million Tokens)
| Model | Input | Output | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Haiku 3 | $0.25 | $1.25 | Cheapest, fast tasks |
| Claude Haiku 3.5 | $0.80 | $4.00 | Faster with better quality |
| Claude Haiku 4.5 | $1.00 | $5.00 | Latest Haiku, strong value |
| Claude Sonnet 4.6 | $3.00 | $15.00 | Balanced quality and cost |
| Claude Opus 4.6 | $5.00 | $25.00 | Most capable model |
Prompt Caching
Anthropic supports prompt caching. When Praxiss sends the same analysis prompt repeatedly (which it does across a review cycle), cached reads cost just 10% of the base input price. This materially reduces costs for batch review processing.
Typical Organisation Spend
Each review analysis uses roughly 2,000 to 4,000 input tokens and 1,000 to 2,000 output tokens.
50-person org, quarterly reviews:
- Around 200 reviews per year
- Around 800K input tokens and 400K output tokens
- On Claude Haiku 3: approximately $0.70 per year
- On Claude Sonnet 4.6: approximately $8.40 per year
200-person org, monthly check-ins:
- Around 2,400 reviews per year
- Around 9.6M input tokens and 4.8M output tokens
- On Claude Haiku 3: approximately $8.40 per year
- On Claude Sonnet 4.6: approximately $101 per year
With prompt caching active, input costs drop by up to 90%. Real-world spend will be lower than these figures. The $5 minimum credit purchase will cover most small teams for several months.
Rate Limit Tiers
Anthropic has two main tiers based on account spend history. The Build tier (default) has lower rate limits. The Scale tier, which activates after meaningful spend, carries higher limits. For typical Praxiss usage, the Build tier is sufficient. You won't hit rate limits during normal review cycles.
Security
Treat your API key the same way you treat your billing password.
- Store it in a password manager. Not a text file, not a team Slack channel, not email.
- Praxiss encrypts your key at rest. Once you save it in Settings, you don't need to keep a copy elsewhere.
- Set a credit limit. Load only what you need. Start with $5 to $10 and top up as required. This naturally caps your exposure if a key is ever compromised.
- Rotate keys every 90 days. Create a new key in the Anthropic console, update Praxiss, then delete the old one.
- Use workspace features. If multiple people in your organisation need API access, use Anthropic's workspace and member management tools rather than sharing a single key.
- Monitor usage. The Anthropic console shows usage by day and by key. Check it periodically so anything unusual stands out.
Troubleshooting
"Invalid API key" error in Praxiss
Check that you copied the full key including the sk-ant- prefix. Look for trailing spaces. Confirm you selected Anthropic (Claude) as the provider, not OpenAI or Gemini.
"Insufficient credits" error Your prepaid balance is depleted. Go to console.anthropic.com, open Settings > Billing, and add more credits. Even $5 covers considerable Praxiss usage.
"Rate limit exceeded" You've hit your tier's rate limits. This is more common during batch processing where all reviews run at once. Space out requests, wait a few minutes, and retry. Reaching the Scale tier raises these limits, but requires meaningful spend history first.
"Model not available" error Some models may not be accessible in all regions or account types. Check which models your account can use under Usage > Models in the Anthropic console.
Key works in the Anthropic playground but not in Praxiss Re-copy the key directly from the Anthropic console. Delete the key field in Praxiss settings completely, then paste fresh. Watch for invisible characters that browsers sometimes insert.
Responses seem slow Opus models take longer than Sonnet or Haiku because they run more processing. If speed matters more than peak output quality, switch to Sonnet or Haiku in your Praxiss AI configuration.
Which AI Provider Should You Choose?
Praxiss supports Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI, and Google Gemini through BYOK AI. A quick comparison:
| Anthropic (Claude) | OpenAI | Google Gemini | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free tier | No | Limited | Yes, generous |
| Cheapest option | $0.25/$1.25 per MTok | $0.10/$0.40 per MTok | $0.10/$0.40 per MTok |
| Best quality | Claude Opus 4.6 | GPT-5.4 | Gemini 3 Pro |
| Best value | Claude Haiku 3 | GPT-4.1 nano | Gemini 2.0 Flash |
| Billing model | Prepaid credits | Post-pay | Post-pay (free tier available) |
Choose Anthropic if you want carefully considered AI outputs, your organisation prioritises AI safety and transparency, or you prefer the prepaid model where you control spend upfront.
Choose OpenAI if your team already uses ChatGPT and you want familiar model behaviour, or you want the widest model selection.
Choose Google Gemini if you want to start testing for free, your organisation runs on Google Workspace, or you need the lowest per-token pricing.
All three providers produce quality results with Praxiss. At typical usage volumes, the total annual cost difference is a few dollars. Choose based on preference and trust. You can switch providers at any time with no data loss.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a paid Anthropic account to use Praxiss BYOK AI? Yes. Anthropic requires a payment method and a minimum $5 credit purchase before API keys become available. There is no free tier. The good news is that typical Praxiss usage is minimal. A small team will spend less than $10 per year on Claude API calls.
Which Claude model should I use with Praxiss? Claude Sonnet 4.6 is the best default choice. It delivers high-quality analysis at a reasonable cost, and prompt caching keeps real-world input costs well below the listed price. If you want to minimise spend, Claude Haiku 3 is capable and extremely affordable. Opus is worth considering if output quality is critical and cost is not a concern.
Is my API key stored securely in Praxiss? Yes. Praxiss encrypts all API keys at rest. Once you save your key in Settings, it is not exposed in plain text anywhere in the platform. You should not keep additional copies of the key outside a password manager.
What happens if my Anthropic credits run out? Praxiss will return an error when it tries to process AI requests. You will need to top up your prepaid balance in the Anthropic console before AI-native features resume. This is easy to avoid by setting a calendar reminder to check your balance periodically, or by loading enough credits to cover a full review cycle upfront.
Can I switch from Anthropic to a different provider later? Yes. You can update your BYOK AI provider at any time in Praxiss Settings > Integrations > AI Configuration. Your historical data and review records are not affected. The change applies to new AI requests from that point forward.
